Brazil's newly nominated head of the planned 2025 COP30 climate summit in the Amazonian city of Belem warned on Tuesday that President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement would cast a shadow over the talks.

André Corrêa do Lago, the experienced Brazilian diplomat and climate negotiator appointed this week, told the Financial Times that the exit of the US could also allow nations such as China, India and Brazil to take a bigger role in the world’s most important climate talks.

The US reversal on climate change will have “a big influence” on discussions at the global summit, said COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago.
