First discovered: 12:16 p.m. Jan. 9 A new wildfire was reported today at 12:16 p.m. in San Diego County. Palm Fire has been burning on private land. Currently, details about the containment or cause of the fire are unknown.

After restoring electricity on Thursday afternoon to all customers in rural areas impacted by public safety shutoffs, strong Santa Ana winds overnight forced San Diego Gas & Electric to turn off the power again.

To Victoria Hilton, 76, who lives in the Heavenly Oaks Mobile Home Park in the mountain community of Guatay in East San Diego County, the power shutoffs felt like an eternity. She lost power for two days.

Border Fire initially started 6:23 p.m. Jan. 1 in San Diego County. Since its discovery 14 hours ago, it has burned 16.9 acres. A fire crew of 92 has been working on site and they managed to contain 5% of the fire by Thursday morning. The cause of it remains under investigation.

San Diego Gas & Electric began restoring power Thursday to customers placed under a public safety power shutoff, allaying the worries of some in high fire-risk areas even as conditions are expected to remain critical through the end of the week.

Staff at senior care facilities in Ramona and the rest of East County are preparing for the possibility of power shutoffs with the strong Santa Ana winds and the potential fire risk.
