After passing over the Philippines on Sunday, Typhoon Fung-wong is arcing north towards Taiwan and gradually losing strength. As it bends northward, Fung-wong's wind speeds have dropped but it remains a typhoon with outer bands that could dump rain in coastal areas and trigger dangerous storm surges.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an advisory regarding the strong tropical storm (Fung-Wong), which was detected at 8am
Fung-wong is expected to come closest to Hong Kong later on Tuesday into the night, skirting more than 400km to the east of the city, forecaster says.
The city’s fierce weather pattern is fueled by the same Arctic air mass expected to sweep through the eastern two-thirds of the US this week. Forecasts indicate that today will bring the coldest air to tens of millions east of the Rockies since spring.
Typhoon Fung-wong made landfall on the main island of Luzon, prompting the evacuation of more than one million people, just days after an earlier storm killed over 200.
