The northern lights will inject additional dazzle for some across the U.S. this New Year's Eve. The big picture: An incoming solar storm on Tuesday night will provide aurora viewers in many northern states and "some of the lower Midwest to Oregon" one last chance to catch the lights this year,

A solar storm which hit the Earth on New Year's Day brought the first strong display of the Northern Lights across Wales in 2025. Images of bright purple and pink coloured aurora were captured from Denbighshire to Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, and Swansea on Wednesday night.

But our chances of catching it may be affected by weather conditions, as the Met Office said in a statement ( via Manchester Evening News): "A coronal mass ejection (CME) which left the Sun early on 29 December, is expected to arrive on New Year’s Eve. But, although the Northern Lights may be in place, visibility could hamper any sightings."
