Typhoon Fung-wong blows away from the Philippines, leaving 8 dead and 1.4 million displaced
The typhoon, forecast to head northwest toward Taiwan, lashed the northern Philippines while the country was still dealing with the devastation wrought last week by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead.
Non-profit organizations and the Catholic church in Toronto are raising funds to help people in the Philippines after two typhoons ripped through the country in recent days, killing more than two hundred and displacing more than a million.
Footage filmed on 9 November from the Philippines shows the moment Typhoon Fung-wong swept through, causing huge waves to drench coastal towns. Elsewhere, bridges were whipped about in the high winds of 185km/h (115mph) and people swam through floodwater in the streets.
Typhoon Fung-Wong slammed ashore on Aurora province in Luzon, the Philippines most populated island Sunday evening, prompting the evacuation of nearly a million people.
Local missionaries sent back pictures, saying people in the Philippines are wading in mud up to their knees following a typhoon.
A weakened Typhoon Fung-wong is now passing over the South China Sea and expected to head to Taiwan, after leaving two people dead in the Philippines. Some 1.4 million in the Philippines had been preemptively evacuated before Fung-wong made landfall on Sunday as a super typhoon, carrying winds of 185km/h (115mph) and gusts of 230km/h (143mph).
