RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Aryna Sabalenka clinched the year-end No. 1 spot in the women's rankings for the first time when Iga Swiatek lost at the WTA Finals on Tuesday.

Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are far from strangers. Swiatek had won 11 of their 12 matches before Tuesday's WTA Finals match. However, it quickly became clear that today's match would be more competitive.

Coco Gauff claimed just a second win in 13 meetings against Iga Swiatek to book her spot in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. The American’s 6-3 6-4 victory also ensures Aryna Sabalenka will finish the year as world number one, with defending champion Swiatek no longer able to overtake the Australian Open and US Open winner.
