WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS will lay off roughly 7,000 workers in Washington and around the country beginning Thursday, a person familiar with the plans told The Associated Press.

The DOGE-driven job cuts are coming in the midst of the tax filing season, and some tax industry professionals fear disruptions.

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service will lay off about 6,700 employees on Thursday, a person familiar with the matter said, a restructuring that could strain the tax-collecting agency's resources during the critical tax-filing season.

The IRS reportedly plans to layoff around 6,000 employees amid a hiring freeze set by President Donald Trump. The IRS layoffs are set to begin Thursday primarily impacting new hires, according to the New York Times and Reuters.

The employees who will be affected — in a single division of the IRS — are expected to be notified Thursday that they've been fired.
