US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will not allow Israel to annex the occupied West Bank, drawing a rare red line over Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territory.

The past three months have seen an increase in Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank alongside threats of annexation and mounting violence there and in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Security Council heard on Monday.

Israel has taken a raft of dramatic steps this year to ensure it retains permanent control over much, if not all, of the occupied West Bank, including measures that the Government had previously deferred because they were deemed too sensitive.

The list now contains 158 companies — the vast majority Israeli, with others from from the U.S., Canada, China, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The president told leaders of Arab and Muslim-majority countries that he would pressure Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank and to back a U.S. peace plan for the Gaza war, Middle East officials and a U.

The U.S. president rejected calls from some far-right politicians in Israel who want to extend sovereignty over the area and snuff out hopes for a Palestinian state.

Many have been unable to leave the territory since the Allenby Bridge crossing was shut indefinitely on Wednesday.

The president presented a 21-point plan for peace in the Middle East to regional leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
