The researchers took CT scans of the bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), generally found in the Arctic, and the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).

Four covers were identified as coming from harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), one was traced to a harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) and one to a bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus).
