Cold air moving over the still largely ice-free Great Lakes is kicking off a prolonged period of heavy lake-effect snow.

Several more inches of lake effect snow are likely to coat roads today in Central New York. Three to 4 inches are expected during the day as bands of lake effect snow flow in from Lake Ontario. A winter weather advisory remains in place until 1 a.

Parts of western New York received 2 feet of snow from multiple rounds of lake-effect snow this week. Lake-effect snow warnings remain in effect for some of these same areas through Thursday.
