Allen Gwinn, park ranger at Raystown, said the lake is one of the corps’ 16 flood-control projects. This one is designed to slow the flow of water toward Mt. Union, Lewistown and Harrisburg.

Raystown Lake is open all year, even in the winter. It’s about two hours from Harrisburg, three hours from Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and four hours from Philadelphia.
