Eventually, St. Hilary returned to Tours from exile in 361 AD so Martin traveled there to live, work and study. St. Hilary gave Martin a small piece of land where he and his disciples lived.

On Nov. 11, the Catholic Church honors St. Martin of Tours, who left his post in the Roman army to become a “soldier of Christ.” Martin was born around the year 316 in modern-day Hungary.

Few will remember it in today’s secularized Europe, but the feast of St. Martin of Tours, celebrated on Nov. 11 each year, has for centuries held a similar significance to Thanksgiving in the U.S.
