The parietal layer lines the inner regions of the fibrous pericardium, while the visceral layer lines the outer layer of the heart and is therefore also known as the epicardium.

Extensive thickening of both visceral pericardium (5 to 6 mm) and parietal pericardium (3 to 6 mm) with areas of adherence between them was found at surgery in each patient.
