Detectives are looking for video captured before, during, or after the shooting Monday in a strip mall parking lot.

Detectives in Riverside County are asking for the community’s help in a shooting investigation involving an off-duty Hemet police officer earlier this week. On Sept. 16, officers with the Murrieta Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in a parking lot at 39540 Murrieta Hot Springs Road at around 9:15 a.

The off-duty officer witnessed the confrontation and intervened before opening fire, according to police. He struck the man several times. An ambulance took him to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

It is not clear why the off-duty police officer shot the man involved in a road rage argument. News reports say the wounded man may have had a fake gun.
