Tidal action pumping warmer sea water on the underside of the massive Thwaites Glacier will “inexorably” accelerate its melting this century, which could lead to the collapse of the entire West Antarctic ice sheet and seriously impact global sea levels,

The massive glacier – which is roughly the size of Florida – is of particular interest to scientists because of the rapid speed at which it is changing and the impact its loss would have on sea levels (the reason for its “Doomsday” moniker). It also acts as an anchor holding back the West Antarctic ice sheet.

Greenland's glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, and scientists say this will have serious repercussions in Europe. The last decade has witnessed extreme ice melt in Greenland. Research findings published in the "Journal of Climate" by a team from the University of Barcelona highlight dramatic phenomena related to ice melt in recent decades.
