Microsoft has ended access to its data centers for a unit of the Israeli military that helped power a massive surveillance operation against Palestinian civilians, according to a report by The Guardian.

Microsoft has terminated a set of services for the Israeli military after an investigation suggested Israel was using the company’s cloud computing technology for mass surveillance of Palestinians.

A series of media reports have alleged that Israel's forces have abused U.S. tech products to advance their aims in Palestinian territories.

Microsoft said it found that Israel was violating some terms of service for its products and that it does “not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians.”

The software company made the move after an internal investigation indicated Israel’s defense ministry used Microsoft’s Azure cloud services for surveillance, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The move by the Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant is in response to an Aug. 6 report by The Guardian, which revealed how Microsoft Azure was being used to store and process millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls made each day in Gaza and the West Bank.
