Officers and rangers from the New York State Environmental Conservation responded to 911 calls reporting the moose struggling to survive in the frozen lake.

Police called in the help of trained DEC staff to get the moose out of the water. DEC Rangers Evan Nahor and Matt Savarie used jet sleds to keep themselves from falling through the ice as they cut a passage through the ice from where the moose fell into the water to the shore.

"There’s no training manual on how to get a moose out of the ice," said one of the DEC officers involved in the rescue.

State Department of Environmental Conservation officials rescued a moose that had broken through the ice on Lake Abanakee in Hamilton County. Dressed in cold-water rescue gear, the officers ventured out onto the ice.
