Online mode was first introduced in Mario Kart Wii, but Mario Kart 8 didn't make many changes to its formula. It allows 12 players to join in online matchmaking, but aside from that, there's not a lot to it to make the online mode more interesting than racing against CPU opponents.

In the new Mario Kart game revealed during the Switch 2’s first trailer, players noticed a number of details, including some character redesigns.

Nintendo has already confirmed that most existing Switch games will be compatible with the Switch 2 and that the Switch 2 will support physical cartridges from the original Switch. That means the Switch 2 will already have a huge selection of games on day one, even if most of the above games end up being just rumors.
