For now, Google still appears to be testing the Download Manager for the Play Store. However, given that the feature is already in a working state, it should go live for the public sooner rather than later.

The “dangerous” permissions highlighted by that report include location tracking, access to cameras, contacts and the phone itself. Google’s enhanced protection doesn’t clamp down as widely as that, but focuses on financial exploits that require user credentials and one-time passcodes.

San Francisco-based U.S. District Judge James Donato made the decision on Friday as part of an antitrust lawsuit against Google brought by "Fortnite" maker Epic Games. Google argued that Donato's Oct. 7 injunction would harm the company and introduce "serious safety, security and privacy risks into the Android ecosystem."

Google says that opening up its Play Store to third-party app stores "harms safety and privacy" and "puts users at risk."

A federal judge in California has granted Google's request to temporarily halt his previous order, which required the company to revamp its Play Store by November 1, allowing users more options for downloading software.
