Argentina’s President Javier Milei’s negotiating team has left Azerbaijan less than four days into the COP29 climate summit, while France’s climate minister said she wouldn’t return to the talks as political tensions rippled through the conference.

The President-elect, who has called climate change a hoax, is hostile to global efforts to slow planetary warming, shifting the leadership burden to Europe and China.

The 2024 summit in Azerbaijan comes amid fresh reports showing that global warming levels are accelerating, bringing more intense climate-related disasters and an increased demand for funding to mitigate and protect communities from the effects of climate change.
