He'd spent all day Sunday with Guthrie in Tampa for the Sunday Night Football game, then stayed up until 11 p.m. to watch his favorite team, the Washington Commanders, win the game. His first-day, back-to-school jitters started with rising at 3:45 a.m. for his hour commute to 30 Rock.

Melvin was already a co-host of the third hour of Today, but he only began hosting the 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. hours on Jan. 13. Guthrie kicked off Melvin’s first show by having the show announcer chant Melvin's name multiple times to mark the occasion.
