  1. The Ford Y Block 272 cubic inch (4.5 L) engine was first put into a Ford vehicle in 1955, and was the standard engine included with the majority of Ford models. Two-barrel 162 hp and four-barrel 182 hp versions of the Y Block 272 were offered when the engine was introduced.

    Mercury customers received an uprated 256 cubic inch Y-block rated at 161 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque. For 1955, Ford increased the displacement and made engines at both 272 and 292 cubic inches. The 272 made 162 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. All basic Ford products received this engine.

    The Ford Y-Block was introduced in 1954. Displacement was 239 cu. in. Bore was 3.500" and stroke was 3.100" with 6.324" connecting rods. Model year 1954 Mercury vehicles had a 256 cu. in. version with 3.625" bore and 3.100" stroke. Displacement was increased in 1955 to 272 cu. in. for most Ford production cars.
